Travel Blogs and Dot.Com-rades:
Below is a selection of some of my favourite on-line backpacking and travel resources there’s some great info out there if you just know where to look… And we do:
Around the World “L” - A loving, 6-foot-tall Boston English teacher, learning around the globe.
Lillie’s blog is a must if your thinking about teaching English while your traveling. Her blog features thoughtful insights into the life that goes with being a teacher in a faraway place and some amazing articles written by her students along the way. She is an amazing resource and well worth looking up! Twitter – @WorldLillie
Runaway Jane – Sick with the daily grind and inspired by the on-line travel community Jane decided to do something about it. Periodically traveling through Europe and sharing her unique outlook with the world she is an inspiration for anyone looking for that final push. She is an amazingly talented artist and has a sketch book section on her blog you NEED to check out. She also heads up two other superb blogs: Jane’s Guide to Scotland – A personl guide to the country of Scotland by freelance travel writer, and local girl, Jane Meighan & Living in a Hostel – All you need to know about hostels, and the backpacker way of life – Twitter @RunawayJane
Jonny Vagabond – He left home in March 2010, backpacking for a year or until the money runs out — whichever comes first. He planned to buy a one-way ticket to Thailand and plot the rest of the trip from there, in order to be as flexible as possible. He is being strict about one thing though – going “Low and Slow“. He says: “Traveling low to the ground, taking ground transport where possible, and traveling as the locals do is the ideal way to experience a place.” He has some great articles on his site and his Twitter updates are well worth following – Twitter @JonnyVagabond
Far West China – Is a blog based on… You guessed it – the far west regions of China, Xinjiang to be exact. Josh Summers left his home and his possessions behind and headed off into a remote and unknown to him part of the world. When he wasn’t teaching he was busy backpacking around the region and sharing what he found – His blog should be your first port of call if your thinking of heading to Xinjiang, it contains well-researched background of the region’s history, ethnicity, and customs. The is a great language guide section that needs your attention – Twitter @FarWestChina
Beers and Beans – A beautifully written personal account of Beth and Randy, a pair of 30 something travelers who are setting off across America and around the world. They share their thoughts and hopes in a honest and sincere way that’s hard to come by… They have a way of finding the details and making them count, their pictures are to die for and their site features some great resources on Budget Travel, volunteering and Wwoofing – Twitter @BeersandBeans
My Several Worlds – Carrie Kellenberger is the driving force behind a group of very highly revered travel blogs. I know her best for her blog My Several Worlds, a captivating travel site rich with useful and insightful articles about a broad range of travel topics. Hers is the first blog which I’ve seen that features language lessons – Peggy teaches Chinese. She also heads up things at the award winning site Taiwan photography – a community site stuffed with hand picked images of the beautiful country she calls home. If that’s not enough Carrie also runs Lay your head here an accommodation website featuring hotel reviews by travelers for travelers – Twitter @Globetrotteri
Backpacking-Tips-Asia.com
A guide to backpacking in Asia and a free compilation of personal backpacking tips. Written and updated with a very personal touch this site is a great resource for first timers. There’s a lot of information on there and lots of in depth advice about particular places.
Trail of Ants Travel Blog – Trail of Ants is probably the sexiest travel blog on the net, it follows the personal journey of Ant Stone. There’s more to it than just one fellows rantings, it’s full of useful advice, tips and stories from a traveler for a traveler. The stories are always a great read and Ant’s style of writing is easy and addictive. He’s also packing a sweet directory of other travel blogs called “the T-Bag” – Twitter @TrailOfAnts
