Right now we can’t offer payment for articles and stories – but that will soon change… Backpacking is all about the community and there is a huge one here, on-line just waiting for you to get involved…
Currently we’re hungry for articles/tips/photos about:
- Budget planning
- Route planning
- Border crossings
- Country/place specific guides (contributions towards our travel guides – these will be paid!!! depending on size/amount of work involved etc. Part guides are also fine – so a nice piece on bus times in and out of Bangkok perhaps)

Get paid to review a guest house
Before you Backpack pays for guest house reviews…. You heard me right… We pay YOU for budget guest house reviews! BUT ONLY IN ASIA!!!!!!!
We’re only interested in your review if you’ve actually stayed there… This isn’t a quick fire way to earn cash by popping your head around doors.. We want actual experiences by backpackers – for backpackers!
The whole point of it is that backpackers can write an honest review about a place they’ve stayed, share that information with other backpackers and make a little cash for their trouble… Simple.
We don’t pay a lot, we’re not that rich just yet. We pay $5 for every review we publish. I know $5 doesn’t seem like much but look at it this way…
$5 can buy you:
- For a start it can pay for your night’s accommodation.
- A Pad-Thai and a bottle of Beer Chang in Bangkok.
- A day’s rental on a motorcycle so you can explore.
- A bus ticket between Vang Vieng and Luang Probang.
- An entire day’s WiFi access in Saigon….. The list goes on!
What we’re looking for:
- An honest and readable review that other backpackers can relate to.
- Make it personal, a bit of humour goes a long way.
- What it’s like to actually stay at a place. (only review it if your staying there)
- Price and value for money.
- Amenities – (WiFi, good communal area or services nearby).
- A couple of pictures.
And that’s about it…
What we’re not looking for:
- Submissions from Guest-houses themselves –
- Multiple submissions from people running in and out of guest-houses quickly…
- Derogatory information from disgruntled backpackers (a bad review is a lot different to just being mean).
How it works:
- You stay at the guest-house / hostel
- You write the review according to our submission guidelines
- You submit the review.
- We check the review and if it’s OK, we publish it
- We pay you $5 for your trouble via Paypal or Amazon gift voucher….
Submission guidelines:
Guest house details
- Name
- Location
- Contact details – Phone, website, email etc
- Price
- Value for money (marks out of 10)
Date of review
Review (Around 200words)
- What are the rooms like? What’s the communal areas like? Are the staff friendly? General observations.
Amenities:
- List what’s nearby? Do they have WiFi, restaurant, good communal area, local services.
The good:
- A list of good points, remember – Every place no matter how grubby or noisy has it’s plus points (We don’t want to run people out of business). What was good? Why was it good?
The Bad:
- A list of bad points – Remember that this is someone’s livelihood, be honest but not critical. If they’re super busy – try to take that into account when it takes an hour for food to arrive…
Any other things worth mentioning.
